Guillermo
Figueroa-Sanabia
began his musical studies with his parents, distinguished musicians in
Puerto Rico, and two older brothers -- José and Jaime (Kachiro) -- who
went on to become violinists of international reknown. He graduated in
1936 from the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, where he studied under
Jacques Thibaud and Georges Enesco and took the First
Prize in violin. He was also awarded the Boucherit Scholarship as the
most talented student at the Ecole. With his brothers José, Kachiro,
Rafael and Narciso, he formed part of the Figueroa Quintet under the
tutelage of Diran Alexanian and Alfred Cortot. On his return to
Puerto Rico, he was principal violist of the Puerto Rico Symphony
Orchestra, member of the Festival Casals Orchestra under Casals,
conductor of the Chamber Orchestra of the Institute for Puerto Rican
Culture and of the Bayamón Chamber Orchestra, and guest conductor of
the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. For many years, he was a respected
pedagogue privately, at the Escuelas Libres de Música, and as professor
at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music.
